Dashain Delight: Nepali Potatoes & Green Peas Achar Recipe!

Hi guys, welcome to Pabs Kitchen. Today, I’m making a classic Nepali dish known as "Aloo Matar Filunge ko Achar" or Potatoes, Green Peas, and Niger Seeds Achar. This is a beloved dish in my region, especially during the festival season. It's simple, delicious, and perfect for celebrating Dashain or any special occasion. If you can't find Niger seeds, don't worry; you can substitute them with sesame seeds or pumpkin seeds. Let's get started and enjoy this flavorful dish!

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium-sized potatoes

  • 1 cup green peas (fresh or dried, soaked in water)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 1/4 cup spring coriander, roughly chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1-inch piece of ginger, minced

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • 1/2 tsp hung plum or Lapsi powder (optional)

  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)

  • Salt to taste

  • 2 tbsp Niger seed powder (or sesame seeds or pumpkin seeds)

  • 3-4 tbsp mustard oil

  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds

  • A pinch of turmeric powder

  • Juice of 1 lemon

Instructions:

  1. Boil the Potatoes:

    • Slit the potatoes slightly on one side to help them cook evenly.

    • Place the potatoes in a pot, add enough water to cover them, and cook with the lid on over medium to high heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are soft.

    • Test their doneness by poking them with a fork; if it goes in easily, remove them from heat and let them cool.

  1. Prepare Niger Seed (or Substitute) Powder:

    • While the potatoes are cooking, dry roast the Niger seeds (or substitute) in a pan over medium heat until they crackle.

    • Blend or pound the roasted seeds into a fine powder and set it aside.

  1. Prepare the Achar:

    • Once the potatoes have cooled down, peel the skin and chop them into bite-sized cubes.

    • In a large bowl, combine the chopped potatoes, green peas, finely chopped onion, roughly chopped spring coriander, minced garlic, and ginger.

    • Add coriander powder, hung plum or Lapsi powder (if using), red chili powder, salt, and Niger seed powder. Mix everything well.

  1. Prepare the Oil Seasoning:

    • Heat 3-4 tbsp of mustard oil in a pan.

    • Add fenugreek seeds and fry until they turn dark.

    • Add a pinch of turmeric powder and mix.

  1. Combine Everything:

    • Pour the seasoned oil mixture over the minced garlic and ginger in the bowl.

    • Combine all the ingredients well and add lemon juice for a tangy kick.

  1. Final Touch:

    • Adjust the spiciness by adding fresh chopped chilies if desired.

    • Your delicious and easy Potatoes, Green Peas, and Niger Seeds Achar are ready!
